If there were a ranking for points of cultural interest per square kilometre, the counties of Girona would surely be right near the top. Cultural experiences await you at every turn, starting with the historical legacy of the area: Palaeolithic and Neolithic settlements, remains of Iberian villages, Greek and Roman ruins, exceptional mediaeval heritage (with the noteworthy presence of Romanesque art and an outstanding and well-preserved Jewish legacy), and major modernist works.

Do not forget to explore the work of Salvador Dalí and other illustrious painters, such as those of the Olot school. As for popular culture, there is so much to discover, with ancient festivals and traditions that are deeply ingrained in the people of this region.

Culture

L'Estartit is a pretty seaside resort situated between the foothills of the Montgrí Massif mountain range and the Mediterranean Sea, part of the borough of Torroella de Montgrí and presided over by a 13th century castle, L’Estartit still retains the old world charm of a traditional Spanish fishing harbour which now rubs shoulders with a modern marina. Many restaurants, with fresh fish on the menu, shops, cafes and bars can be found dotted along the promenade

One of its major assets is the fact that the beach,- one of the longest sandy beaches of the Costa Brava, is overlooked by the lovely Medes Islands, an archipelago of seven islands which together make up one of the most beautiful nature and marine reserves in the western Mediterranean, great for diving enthusiasts.

A magnificent old town

Torroella de Montgrí is six kilometres from the sea, and its old town is surrounded by walks following the old Roman defensive wall, remains of which can still be seen. Special mention should be made of Les Bruixes Tower (15th-16th centuries) and Santa Caterina Gate (14th century). Sant Genís Church is a gem of Gothic architecture and should not be missed on a visit to the village. Also outstanding is the Romanesque Sant Antoni Chapel, set in the porticoed Plaça de la Vila Square. Also in this square you will find Casa de la Vila House (15th-16th centuries), with its big sun dial. On Paseo de l'Església Avenue you will find El Mirador Palace (9th-14th centuries), which has been restored and is currently home to a luxury hotel. The village hosts an International Music Festival, along with seasons of live jazz in July and August.
